Tom Hardy to Star in Sony’s Venom, with Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer Directing

Sony has been plotting a Venom movie for more than a year now, and it appears the studio’s plans are finally coming to fruition: Tom Hardy is in final negotiations to star in Venom, while Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer has all but signed on to direct. Per THR, the project is way up on Sony’s priority list, with a premiere date already set for Oct. 5, 2018.

It makes perfect sense that Sony would prioritize Venom: a report from earlier this year revealed Sony’s plan “to use an R-rated, Venom-starring film to establish their own Marvel universe.” You can revisit our write-up on Venom’s initial placement on Sony’s calendar for more information on Venom as a character, as well as how this film fits into yet another Spider-Man universe.

Venom first appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, portrayed rather disappointingly by Topher Grace. Imagine the same character—a hulking menace, animated by an evil alien symbiote—but brought to life by Oscar-nominee Hardy, one of the only saving graces of The Dark Knight Rises. Here’s hoping Hardy’s move from DC to Marvel is as perfect on celluloid as it is on paper.

Venom, scripted by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, starts shooting this fall and somehow hits theaters on Oct. 5, 2018. Check out Hardy getting into the spirit below.
