Lilly Hiatt, daughter of critically acclaimed singer-songwriter John Hiatt, is about to make her New West Records debut, and it’s going to be one for the books.

Hiatt, who is known for her confessional lyrics and charming Southern twang, released the video for “Trinity Lane,” the first single and title track from her forthcoming album, via Rolling Stone just last month. Lucky for you, you can now watch the Paste-exclusive video for the next song from Hiatt’s record, “The Night David Bowie Died,” right here, right now.

“The Night David Bowie Died” is about just that: the night David Bowie died. The song tells a story of Hiatt’s experiences from the moment she heard of Ziggy Stardust’s passing.

“The night David Bowie died, I was in disbelief. I wanted to talk to someone, but it was too late to make a phone call,” says Hiatt. “I cried quietly and went to bed. The next day, I picked up my guitar and hit record on Garage Band. I started to sing and those were the first words that came out. I felt like Bowie was giving me a little gift.”

In the video, she fittingly dons Bowie’s Aladdin Sane lightning bolt. Trinity Lane is named for the street she lives off of in East Nashville; the video for “The Night David Bowie Died” was filmed in East Nashville, giving it an authentic feel that is hard to come by nowadays.

She says of the video:

It was a special day shooting the video with Will Morgan Holland. He had the idea to sport Bowie’s Aladdin Sane lightning bolt, and I was into it. A little homage to the Starman intertwined with personal grief. We went up and down Nolensville Pike at spots he had picked, and hung out with the regulars. The Laundry Matt, The Dollar Store, Brett’s Basement Bar, Beverly’s Barber Shop. A lot of new friends make appearances.

Trinity Lane is due out on Aug. 25 via New Weset and available for preorder here. Michael Trent of Shovels & Rope produced the record.
