Hollywood doesn’t produce too many female-led action movies. Charlize Theron is the most recent lethal lady in Atomic Blonde, with Angelina Jolie in Salt and Scarlett Johansson in Lucy as more antiquated examples. These films aren’t as frequent as they should be. So it’s only more shocking and exciting to see Taraji P. Henson, the breakout star of Fox’s Empire, starring in her own action film as a cut-throat assassin.
Proud Mary stars Henson as a merciless assassin of the Boston mob whose maternal side is awakened upon meeting a young boy. What this means for Mary’s career, we don’t yet know—the trailer only shows gunslinging Mary in a black ensemble backed by the titular Tina Turner track. The film is directed by Babak Najafi (London Has Fallen) and co-stars Bill Brown (How to Get Away with Murder), Margaret Avery (The Color Purple), Xander Berkley (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon).
Proud Mary will hit theaters Jan. 12. Watch the kick-ass trailer above, and find the film’s awesome poster below.
