We Have The First Plot Details of Quentin Tarantino’s “1969” Movie

After much speculation about Quentin Tarantino’s ninth feature film, we’ve finally been given some more concrete plot details. It had first been erroneously reported that the film set in the late ‘60s would focus around the Manson Family murders, but that was rebuked on some level by Tarantino, who said “It’s not Charles Manson, it’s 1969.” Thus, the film is taking a wider look at the Hollywood world of the late ‘60s, an era that has always seemed to fascinate Tarantino as an auteur. According to Variety, here’s your semi-official synopsis:

Set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, Tarantino’s upcoming movie, according to a source who read the script, focuses on a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and is looking for a way to get into the film business. His sidekick—who’s also his stunt double—is looking for the same thing. The horrific murder of Sharon Tate and four of her friends by Charles Manson’s cult of followers serves as a backdrop to the main story.

It’s interesting time for such details to emerge, given the news this morning that Charles Manson passed away after spending 46 years of his life behind bars. It’s unknown if anyone will actually be cast as playing Manson himself in this film, but it has been reported that Margot Robbie is being sought for the role of Sharon Tate, which implies a fairly significant appearance.

After shopping the script around to numerous studios after severing his connection to Miramax and Harvey Weinstein, Tarantino’s 1969 project finally ended up at Sony Pictures. The script, which is apparently drawing some comparisons to Pulp Fiction, calls for two major male leads, and names that include Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio have repeatedly been raised as some of the actors having discussions/casting meetings with the director. The likes of Pitt and DiCaprio have obviously worked with Tarantino in the past, but we can’t help but wonder what Tom Cruise in a QT movie might look like. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to find out.

Production on the still-unnamed movie reportedly begins in June for a 2019 release.
