Young Fathers Share Majestic “Lord” Video, Set U.K./Euro Tour

Young Fathers have a new album due out next year, and in their words, “it’s about fucking time.” The U.K.-based trio released enthralling lead single “Lord” last month, and now they’ve given us a music video to match.

Directed by Rianne White, the “Lord” visual focuses on Young Fathers’ Alloysious Massaquoi, who sings while riding horses of both the rocking and real varieties. The clip initially evokes feelings of being trapped, with narrow closeups on Massaquoi looking perturbed. As the song’s scope expands, so does the video’s, zooming out and transitioning into a dizzying series of shots: Massaquoi floating in the surf, covered in blood or oil, riding his trusty steed through the water, reveling with his bandmates in the neon-lit rain. It’s an evocative clip that goes from troubled to exultant and back again.

Massaquoi said of the video:

For me, the video stemmed from … Like how do you describe an emotion, clearly and precisely when you’re completely immersed in it all? An act of internal withdrawal from the outside world, when all you need from the outside world is for someone, anyone, to show they care.

The band’s Graham “G” Hastings added, “Kayus [Bankole] brought a rocking horse into the studio one day. God knows why. After we wrote the song, Ally sat on it, took his top off and started riding majestic. Then we thought, ‘Why not?’”

Young Fathers have also announced a tour of U.K. and Europe in March and April of 2018, which includes their biggest headlining show to date: a March 21 performance at London’s 3000-capacity Roundhouse. Tickets for all dates are now on sale on the band’s website.
