has released the third single off his forthcoming album Man of the Woods, titled “Say Something.” This single follows two previous releases, including “Supplies,” with its politically charged video featuring flickering scenes of Donald Trump, racist cops and violent protesters, and the lead single off Timberlake’s fifth studio album, “Filthy,” released at the beginning of the year. Timberlake hinted at his newest single’s release yesterday on Twitter with a cool teaser video of him and country music singer Chris Stapleton walking side-by-side on set.
Along with the collaboration of Stapleton, “Say Something” was produced by both Timbaland and Danja. The video, directed by Artuto Perez Jr. and produced by La Blogothèque, is shot using a technique known as “continuous motion,” giving it an engaging and dynamic flow. In the video, we see Timberlake playing on a drum machine, sporting a flannel shirt and beanie. The recording seems to be at least partly of a live performance, as the echoes of the corridors and inflections of Timberlake’s natural voice are evident in the audio. Timberlake walks us through a beautifully vintage building where musicians appear around the corners, playing along to the track until Stapleton suddenly appears, illuminated, at the end of a staircase. As the two artists walk closer and closer together, a gospel-like choir appear over them, singing the buildup to the hook: “Maybe I’m looking for something I can’t have.”
In a statement accompanying the release of “Filthy,” Timberlake called Man of the Woods his “most ambitious album to date.” Apparently, the artist is taking this ambition with him and passing it on to his music videos, as well. The “Say Something” music video is energizing, providing us with a teaser of what we can look forward to from Timberlake and his team.
Man of the Woods releases on Feb. 2. Two days later, Timberlake will perform at the Super Bowl LII halftime show on NBC. Watch the music video for “Say Something” below, then revisit the details of Man of the Woods here.
