Hulu’s Stephen King Thriller Series Castle Rock Is Coming This Summer

Hulu has set a launch date for their mysterious Stephen King-inspired, J.J. Abrams-executive produced series Castle Rock in a new Super Bowl ad for the show released Thursday.

The ominous clip gives us a good look at Castle Rock’s core cast, including André Holland (Moonlight), Scott Glenn (The Defenders), Sissy Spacek (Carrie), Bill Skarsgård (IT), Melanie Lynskey (Togetherness), Terry O’Quinn (Lost) and Jane Levy (Evil Dead). It’s also packed to the gills with King references, the most obvious one being to Shawshank State Prison.

Hulu describes Castle Rock in a press release as “a psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse [that] combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.” The series has been keep tightly under wraps, making any new footage particularly exciting.

The Castle Rock TV spot below will air during Super Bowl LII this Sunday, Feb. 4. The streamer made a similar move last year, airing a teaser for their then-forthcoming dystopian drama and Margaret Atwood adaptation The Handmaid’s Tale during the big game. Both shows are dark, adult series based on the works of an iconic author—Hulu is clearly betting that Castle Rock will replicate The Handmaid’s Tale’s success. We wouldn’t bet against it.

Castle Rock premieres exclusively on Hulu this summer. Stay tuned for an exact date, watch the show’s Super Bowl spot below, and revisit the series’ previous teasers here and here.
