John Mulaney Has Multiple Netflix Specials on the Way

The almost unfairly funny John Mulaney will bring numerous new stand-up specials to Netflix, we’re pleased to report, starting with John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, which streams worldwide starting on May 1. Kid Gorgeous is the first in a new multi-special deal between the stand-up and streamer, Netflix announced on Wednesday.

Mulaney, an Emmy-winning writer as well as a stand-up and performer, shot his latest special at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, where he sold out an unheard-of seven shows in a row—that’s over 40,000 tickets total—in early 2018. Two-time Tony nominee Alex Timbers, with whom Mulaney worked on his and Nick Kroll’s Broadway show Oh, Hello, directed Kid Gorgeous. The special features set design from Tony winner Scott Pask (The Book of Mormon) and music by Grammy winner Jon Brion.

Kid Gorgeous is just the latest chapter of Mulaney’s long and fruitful relationship with Netflix, which has thus far produced an Emmy-nominated stand-up special (2015’s John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid, one of Paste’s top specials of that year), a delightful animated series (Big Mouth, another collaboration between Mulaney and Kroll), a star-studded forthcoming comedy special (Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity, coming to Netflix next month) and the aforementioned Oh, Hello (currently streaming on Netflix).

You may have spotted Mulaney during the latest episode of Saturday Night Live: The former SNL writer made his first appearance in a beloved sketch that he writes, starring Bill Hader as Weekend Update’s inimitable city correspondent Stefon. Mulaney played Shy, Stefon’s leather-clad attorney, whose girlfriend apparently works at Yoshinoya Beef Bowl.

Paste Comedy Editor Garrett Martin caught Mulaney’s Kid Gorgeous show at last summer’s Just for Laughs, naming the comic one of the best he saw at the festival and praising the “combination of humility and hubris [that] adds a powerful tension to his work.” Sounds like we’re all in for a treat, come Uno de Mayo.
