Lin-Manuel Miranda and “Weird Al” Yankovic Team Up for “The Hamilton Polka”

On Friday, Lin-Manuel Miranda sent out a tweet about the latest Hamildrop.

As you see, Miranda teamed up with comedy parodist “Weird Al” Yankovic for “The Hamilton Polka.” Yankovic’s latest polka medley takes on 14 songs from the hit Broadway stage play and puts a new twist on them. The medley includes “Alexander Hamilton” (original and reprise), “Wait For It,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “Yorktown,” “Dear Theodosia,” “You’ll Be Back,” “The Room Where It Happens,” “Right Hand Man,” “Guns and Ships,” “Washington on Your Side,” “Helpless,” “Non-Stop,” “History Has Its Eyes on You” and “My Shot.” The two men will appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday night to promote the latest Hamildrop.

This latest medley is a part of Yankovic’s long history of taking hit songs and weaving them into a polka tapestry, beginning with “Polka on 45” on his 1984 album In 3-D. The medleys have been a staple on his subsequent albums, except for one.

Since releasing The Hamilton Mixtape in 2016, Miranda has been releasing The Hamildrops since December of last year, with The Decemberists and Miranda collaborating on “Ben Franklin’s Song.” In January, he released a video for “Wrote My Way Out” featuring Nas, Dave East and Aloe Blacc, as well as its remix, featuring Royce Da 5’9, Joyner Lucas and Black Thought. The project will not end until December of this year.

While riding a wave this hard can lead to overexposure, Miranda manages to do it in a way that never seems disingenuous. Hamilton fans can look forward to what else Miranda has in store for the rest of the year.
