CHVRCHES Release Soaring New Single, “Never Say Die”

Scottish synth-pop trio CHVRCHES have unveiled another new single from their forthcoming album, Love Is Dead, out on May 25 via Glassnote Records.

Love Is Dead will be the band’s third LP and their first since 2015’s Every Open Eye. Their new album was produced by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) and will include their previously released singles “Get Out” and “My Enemy,” which featured The National’s Matt Berninger (who also appeared in the band’s “Get Out” visual).

“Never Say Die” is an uplifting electro-pop tune with slick, atmospheric synths and jolting electronic percussion, featuring a chorus in which lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry repeats the song’s title. Even though their album title literally contains the word “dead,” we’ll cut Mayberry and co. some slack, given the song’s beautiful, intricate soundscapes.

Mayberry says of the band’s new single, ”’Never Say Die’ is one of my favorite songs on the record because it really leans into the juxtaposition of what we do — the mixture between the dark and the light. It’s melodic and direct but uses some of the gnarliest sounds we’ve ever tried.”

Mayberry also explains how “Never Say Die” was one of the first tracks she worked on with producer Kurstin: “The chorus lyric came about very quickly but the verses took a lot longer. I really wanted to sum up a feeling of trying to be optimistic when you feel disillusioned by the people around you, but trying to keep going because ‘Goonies Never Say Die.’”

The band also recently released a cover of Beyonce’s “XO,” which they performed in a studio session alongside stripped-down versions of “Get Out” and “The Mother We Share,” taken from their 2013 debut album The Bones of What You Believe.

The band has a few upcoming U.S. shows, including appearances at festivals like Governors Ball, Lollapalooza and Hinterland Music Festival.
