Netflix Horror-Thriller Will Reunite Nightcrawler Director and Jake Gyllenhaal/Rene Russo

Dan Gilroy, the writer-director of 2014’s critically acclaimed psychological thriller Nightcrawler, is reuniting with several of the players who substantially raised his stock in Hollywood and earned him a “Best Original Screenplay” Oscar nomination. His untitled Netflix film just announced its primary and supporting cast, and it’s more than enough reason to get excited, anchored by the return of Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal, who had an amazing turn as a deranged, unethical photographer in Nightcrawler. Also joining the cast are John Malkovich, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, and Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer.

The film has repeatedly been described as a “horror-thriller,” but details are very scarce. And we mean real scarce, as this is the entire listed synopsis:

“The plot follows big-money artists and mega-collectors who pay a high price when art collides with commerce.”

Alright then. That doesn’t necessarily sound like the most “horrific” of premises right off the bat, but then again, neither would the local news setting of Nightcrawler if you summarized it in one sentence. And that’s a pretty strong supporting cast, right? Any time you can get John Malkovich in a movie giving a serious rather than hammy performance, that’s a good thing.

Production is underway in L.A., so expect the final product (presumably with a name by that point) to hit Netflix sometime in late 2018.
