Rapper and producer Boots Riley is set to make his directorial debut with the forthcoming film Sorry To Bother You, starring Atlanta and Get Out actor Lakeith Stanfield, along with a superstar roster of actors such as Westworld and Annihilation’s Tessa Thompson, Call Me by Your Name’s Armie Hammer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Terry Crews, The Walking Dead and Okja’s Steven Yeun, Crashing’s Jermaine Fowler and even Danny Glover.
The official trailer, released on Sunday, shows Stanfield playing Cassius Green, a down-on-his-luck type of character who can’t seem to catch a break. Cassius (Cash for short) discovers he can make it big in telemarketing by selling items using a “white voice.” The conflict comes when he gets promoted to a “Power Seller” role and has to sell some undisclosed item that is morally conflicting. From the looks of it, this movie is set up to be one of the most original comedies of this year.
Initial screenings of Sorry To Bother You made their way through the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this year. Now, you can see the movie via special screenings at SXSW, after which it will hit theaters on July 6. Riley wrote as well as directed the film, which features an original score from Merrill Garbus-led indie-rock act Tune-Yards.
