Infinity War Dominates Box Office With Biggest Opening Weekend of All Time

No surprise to anyone who visited the cinemas this weekend, Avengers: Infinity War has broken several box office records in its opening weekend. Debuting just three months after Black Panther made box-office history, Disney’s superhero melting pot smashed a multitude of global records this weekend, easily outpacing its predecessor with the biggest opening weekend in history, per THR.

Infinity War has claimed the title of the biggest domestic opening of all time with $250 million, beating Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $248 million opening weekend. As if that isn’t enough, Infinity War also took the crown for biggest worldwide opening of all time. The film earned an incredible $380 million internationally, bringing the total worldwide gross to $630 million in just its opening weekend. It surpassed the previous global record holder, The Fate of the Furious, which opened with $541.9 million.

Infinity War probably would have done even better if it had also been released in China this weekend. Because of this, The Fate of the Furious still holds the record for highest international opening gross with $443.2 million. Infinity War holds the number two spot and does not open in China until May 11.

Again to no surprise after seeing the lines at the movie theaters this weekend, Infinity War became the all-time biggest opening for a superhero film, as well, surpassing both Black Panther and DC’s Batman v. Superman: The Dawn of JusticeInfinity War took in $207.4 million just in North America. On Saturday alone, the film set another record, becoming the biggest Saturday gross of all time by earning $83 million. The film surpassed Jurassic World’s $69.6 million, which even opened in the heart of summer when kids were out of school.

Since Infinity War had the biggest Saturday of all time, it also took the prize for biggest Sunday gross of all time. The massive film raked in an estimated total of $61 million, barely besting Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $60 million.

Besides setting numerous North American and global records, Infinity War also set individual market records. The film scored the highest debut ever in South Korea ($39.2 million), Mexico ($25.1 million), Brazil ($18.8 million), the Philippines ($12.5 million), Thailand ($10 million), Indonesia ($9.6 million) and Malaysia ($8.4 million). It became the biggest debut for a Western title in India, grossing $18.6 million.

Infinity War also broke the record for highest-grossing superhero film for an opening weekend in France ($17.7 million), Germany ($14.7 million) and Spain ($8.3) while it became the second highest opening for a superhero film in Italy ($11 million). In Australia, the film became the second highest opener with $23 million, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Expect more records to be broken in the subsequent weeks.
