Chris Pratt Confirms Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Shoots in 2019

Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, aka “Star Wars,” aka nonfictional person Chris Pratt, will return to guarding the galaxy in 2019, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe star confirmed in an Instagram post on Thursday. Pratt took to IG to wish his Guardians and Avengers: Infinity War co-star Pom Klementieff (aka Mantis) a happy birthday, adding, “Can’t wait to start shooting Guardians Vol. 3 with her next year!”

We’ve known for over a year that there would be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Guardians writer-director James Gunn promised as much last March, later confirming his return to write and direct the second sequel, and he’s since revealed that Vol. 3 should open in 2020. (We also know that Mark Hamill may show up in it, although that’s far from a sure thing.) So it’s nice to have a concrete timeline on the next (and perhaps last) Guardians adventure.

... Which brings us to the Infinity War of it all. If you haven’t seen the film, you’ll want to step away from this post.

As those of you who’ve seen Infinity War (or have blithely ignored our spoiler warning) are aware (or are about to be), Star-Lord is the film’s second-biggest asshole, behind only Thanos. In a critical and gut-wrenching scene, the Avengers have the Mad Titan at their mercy, with a universe-saving coup at their literal fingertips, only for Star-Lord to bungle it all up. So Pratt’s character is going to have some serious goodwill to make up in Vol. 3, assuming he’s not able to do so in the Infinity War follow-up (because, you know, he turned into a dust cloud and died).

It’s not only that: This reminder that the Guardians are on track to return to our movie screens in 2020 also reinforces the apparent emptiness of Infinity War’s ending. It’s awfully difficult to take Thanos’ Avenger-slaying universe destruction seriously when we know that the Guardians—all but one of whom “died” during Infinity War’s would-be-brutal denouement—are coming back for another batch of wacky antics in the near future.

But with all that said, Infinity War still managed to deliver a haymaker to the heart, even in light of the clear elasticity of its ending. And of course, we’ll be overjoyed to have the Guardians back in 2020 … even Star-Lord.

See Pratt’s Instagram post below and shake a fist in Star-Lord’s general direction (which, we suppose, is the stars) for getting a lot of good Avengers killed.

Happy Birthday @pom.klementieff whom many of you know as Mantis!!! She’s such a unique, talented and driven artist. Can’t wait to start shooting Guardians Vol. 3 with her next year! Hope you’re having a good day Pom!
