Hailee Steinfeld to Star in Apple’s Emily Dickinson Series

Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen, True Grit) has been cast as Emily Dickinson in Apple’s forthcoming comedy series about the 19th century poet, per Variety.

Dickinson tells the famed poet’s coming-of-age story. The series will explore the limits placed on her by the expectations of her family and society as a young woman who doesn’t quite fit in with her times. Though set in the 1800s, Dickinson will have a modern comedic tone.

Alena Smith (The Affair) will write Dickinson, while David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) will executive produce and direct the series.

Anticipation continues to build for Apple’s entry into the television streaming market. Apple has already picked up roughly 13 series and scripts, including a reboot of Stephen Spielberg’s cult sci-fi series Amazing Stories (though showrunner Bryan Fuller has since left the project) and a Reese Witherspoon-produced series based on Curtis Sittenfeld’s short story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It starring Kristen Wiig. Apple is also developing projects from the likes of Damien Chazelle and M. Night Shymalan, among others.

Steinfeld can be next seen in Bumblebee, a female-led spinoff of the Transformers series.
