John Mayer Releases New Green Screen-Laden Music Video

John Mayer is back with a new music video for his latest song, “New Light.” The video, which features Mayer goofing off in front of a green screen wearing a sweatshirt and pajama pants, is delightfully tacky.

The video marks a welcome change in image for the guitarist. Mayer gained a playboy reputation and frequently embroiled himself in bad press over the years via disastrous, self-serious interviews, such as when he once told Rolling Stone, “I have masturbated myself out of serious problems in my life.”

The video shows a refreshing, lighter side of Mayer, particularly as he leans against a clone of himself in front of the Eiffel Tower or frolicks amidst the savannah with very fake zebras. “I’m pushing 40 in the friendzone,” he quips, and only looks mildly horrified about it. The new Mayer is charming in a way that’s less calculated and more, “Let’s just order Thai and watch Westworld tonight, babe.”

In a post on his Instagram (which is surprisingly hilarious and 100 percent worth checking out), Mayer promoted the video and addressed the less-than-believable graphics: “I needed to make a video for ‘New Light’ but nobody could agree on a budget, so I went to a place downtown and made this with a company that usually does birthday and Bar Mitzvah videos.”

The video was directed by Fatal Farms and “New Light” itself was produced by No I.D., who has previously worked with Jay Z, Kanye West and Common, among many others.

Mayer will embark this summer on an extensive tour with Dead & Company. Check back for more info on his next album, and watch the video for New Light below.
