Marc Maron in Talks to Join Joker Origin Film

GLOW star Marc Maron may be headed back to the ‘80s: The comedian is in talks to join the cast of DC Comics’ Joker origin film, set in 1980s Gotham.

As Variety reports, Maron would star opposite Joaquin Phoenix, onboard to play the Batman nemesis when he’s just a failed stand-up comedian, as well as Atlanta star Zazie Beetz and Robert De Niro.

Besides his role as the cantankerous (and coke-sniffing) Sam Sylvia on Netflix’s wrestling comedy GLOW, Maron is best known as the host of his WTF podcast, in which he interviews celebrity guests from his garage in California.

Todd Phillips, director of The Hangover, will helm the Joker origin story, which is simply titled Joker. Few details have been confirmed about the film’s plot, but Phillips did hint that audiences can expect Joker to be darker than previous DC fare, stating that the film will be “not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

As of now, the film is scheduled for an October 2019 release and will be unattached to Jared Leto’s standalone, Suicide Squad-inspired Joker film. Be sure to check back for further updates.
