Ms. Marvel Co-Creator G. Willow Wilson to Write Ongoing Wonder Woman Series for DC Comics

Despite a hit film (the sole unequivocal success among DC Entertainment’s modern cinematic efforts), Wonder Woman’s ongoing comic series has been…ehh since writer Greg Rucka finished his epic saga. DC Superhero Girls writer Shea Fontana scripted a short arc and The Unexpected’s Steve Orlando begins a finite run this month, but the series languished for over 20 issues under writer James Robinson, whose tenure focused too much on Wonder Woman’s brother (don’t ask) and tying up old crossover loose ends. All of that ends in November when celebrated Ms. Marvel co-creator G. Willow Wilson takes over as Wonder Woman ongoing series writer alongside artist Cary Nord.

DC publisher Dan DiDio broke the news on the DC All Access channel today that Wilson will begin her run with Wonder Woman #58. No art from Nord was provided (the image above is Nord’s art from the New 52-era Superman/Wonder Woman series), but we do have some details on Wilson and Nord’s first arc, titled “The Just War”:

When Steve Trevor’s unit goes missing in an Eastern European country torn by revolution, Wonder Woman immediately flies across the globe to help him—only to slam into the brick wall that is Ares, the God of War, who’s taken a strange interest in this conflict. But why is Ares acting so strange? Has he turned over a new leaf? Does Wonder Woman have a chance to redeem him? And just as important…if Ares has returned to Earth, then what happened to the supposedly unbreachable prison built to contain him—Wonder Woman’s homeland, Themyscira?

“I’m delighted to be writing such an iconic character as Wonder Woman and to be working with DC once again,” Wilson said in a statement. “With more than 75 years of history, Wonder Woman has a wealth of backstory and drama to draw from, and I look forward to putting a spin on Diana and her supporting cast that’s both new, yet familiar. It’ll be a challenge to do her justice, but I like a challenge and can’t wait to get started.”

Wilson previously wrote a Vixen mini-series for DC Comics, as well as the Vertigo titles Cairo and Air and contributions to Superman and The Outsiders. While no specifics were given, Wilson did clarify on Twitter that she isn’t leaving Marvel Comics, where she has “irons in the fire.” Wilson recently passed the 50-issue milestone on the main Ms. Marvel series (not accounting for renumberings).

“Willow’s return to DC to write Wonder Woman is an incredible opportunity for us, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said DiDio. “Keeping our core audience engaged requires having the best storytellers around, and she’s definitely a great addition to our current list of writing talent.”

Part one of Wilson and Nord’s “The Just War” begins in Wonder Woman #58, available in comic stores and digitally November 14th. Stay tuned to Paste for more information on Wilson’s run as it becomes available.
