Daily Dose: Sports Team, “Margate”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Here at Paste Magazine, we love weirdos—people with voices to be heard, dance moves to be seen, and a lack of regard for who’s watching or judging. Today, we’re loving on Sports Team, a west London guitar band made up of six young eccentrics who met while studying at Cambridge University.

The band only has one EP, titled Winter Nets, and a handful of singles out, but they’re definitely an act you should keep on your radar. Their songs boast metallic guitar riffs and steady bass lines that echo in your ears like a college house show. Sports Team’s sound could be compared to a 2013 Parquet Courts. Singer Alex Rice brings a Mick Jagger-type personality to his vocal performances.

On Thursday, Sports Team released “Margate,” an ode to English summers, along with an accompanying video. It’s a fast-paced track with engine-revving energy and howling vocals that contradict the rainy and gloomy stereotype that comes to mind when you think of England.

“’Margate’s’ a song about English summers,” says guitarist Rob Knaggs. “Hosepipe bans. Overgrown hedgerows. Frayed tempers. The season of ‘Reeling in the Years’ and tailbacks on the A303. We went in to record it with Burke Reid during the first group stage games, when things were looking up. Some of that optimism rubbed off.”

The Kris Renner-directed music video was filmed in Margate (surprise!) and it sees the band taking in the sights of the English seaside town while Rice takes his dance moves from the streets to the beach. Said moves will either be the Worst Thing your eyes will experience today, or, the hip-shaking boost you need to get through the rest of this week. We think they’re positively the bee’s knees. Decide for yourself below.

The single is to be released as a double a-side with “Kutcher,” a song about ‘90s MTV dreams and dreamboats that dropped in May, through Holm Front Records.
