Exclusive: Listen to Petal Cover Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky"

Petal has released a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky,” streaming exclusively at Paste today. The song is off the forthcoming Devinyl Splits No. 9, a project by Brooklyn singer-songwriter Kevin Devine, out Sept. 28 through Bad Timing Records.

The Devinyl Splits series pairs Devine with a different artist for each 7-inch. So far, he’s partnered with artists including Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, David Bazan, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Mike Kinsella’s side project Owen. For Devinyl Splits No. 9, he partners with Pennsylvania’s Kiley Lotz, aka Petal, for a record of Tom Petty covers. The collaboration comes on the heels of the 2016 tour they did together alongside Julien Baker and Pinegrove.

“I love Kiley, and her music; she understands that owning your vulnerability is actually the purest form of strength, and the freedom there is threaded through her songwriting and performance,” says Devine. ‘Her cover exemplifies that awareness—there’s something almost confrontational about the directness with which it’s delivered.”

Devine adds that it was Kiley’s idea to pay tribute to Petty with Devinyl Splits No. 9: “These were recorded not long after Tom Petty passed, and it was Kiley’s suggestion we do his songs. I was happy to—he’s of those dozen or so songwriters with whom everyone does their time while figuring their stuff out—and proud to get to release Kiley’s as part of the series.”

Both artists will be touring this fall. A full list of their tour dates can be found further down.

Listen to “You Got Lucky” below, and watch Paste Studio sessions from Petal and Devine while you’re at it. You can preorder their split single here.
