Listen to Tom Petty’s Previously Unreleased Song “Gainesville”

Tom Petty’s “Gainesville” has been released, the third posthumous track to be dropped since Petty’s death last year. The song is off the forthcoming career-spanning box set An American Treasure, out Sept. 28 through Reprise Records.

“Gainesville” is a classic late-era Petty romp. Recorded during the 1998 Heartbreakers sessions for Echo, the song features all the jangly instrumentals and country-fried guitar breakdowns you’d expect from turn-of-the-century Petty, and his iconic voice is still a treat to hear in an entirely new context, especially the little laugh he gives around the three-minute mark. Little moments like that are what helped Petty stay relevant—and more importantly, real—during his long and varied career.

An American Treasure is set to be a document of that variety. The 60-track set will be comprised of previously unreleased recordings, alternate versions of classic songs, rarities, historic live performances and deep cuts. The project was catalyzed by Petty’s daughter Adria and his wife Dana. It’s “a tribute and love letter pointing to the music in between the hits, and a strong musical portrait of the person they know in their hearts,” the two say in a statement.

Listen to “Gainesville” and check out a 1978 performance of “American Girl” from the Paste archives below. You’ll find the extensive An American Treasure tracklist further down.
