The First Trailer for Captain Marvel, Starring Brie Larson, Is Finally Here

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, we finally have a first look at Captain Marvel in action. The earthborn Marvel hero is the star of her self-titled MCU movie, set in the mid ‘90s, with the role being filled by Oscar winner Brie Larson as she takes on Marvel’s long-awaited first solo film for a female hero. The trailer dropped this morning, and it portends big things for the future of the MCU. You can see it below.

If you’re not familiar with the character of Captain Marvel, here’s your synopsis:

Set in the mid-1990s, Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, as she turns into one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes and joins Starforce, an elite Kree military team, before returning home with new questions about her past and identity when the Earth is caught in the center of an intergalactic conflict between two alien worlds.

The Kree, if you’ve forgotten, are the same blue-skinned race of aliens who appear regularly in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and they represent one of the biggest and most powerful civilizations in the MCU galaxy. Ronan the Accuser, the villain of Guardians Vol. 1 is a renegade member of the Kree who will reportedly reappear in Captain Marvel—perhaps even as a member of Starforce, which he has been at times in the Marvel comics. Indeed, half the pleasure of Captain Marvel will likely be seeing various familiar MCU characters in a different setting, such as the de-aged Nick Fury, seemingly before his S.H.I.E.L.D. days are even begun—and with two eyes! And then there’s that invasion of shape-shifting alien Skrulls to deal with as well.

One thing that immediately stands out about the trailer, though, is the change of tone from recent Marvel outings such as Guardians Vol. 2 or Thor: Ragnarok. The humor seems to have been pared way down, at least in this early footage, replaced by a more serious attitude and arty-looking cinematography. Larson’s delivery, likewise, seems considerably more on the staid side than the likes of Thor or Star Lord, although the trailer could be deceiving. Regardless, it seems like Captain Marvel will be a major player when she returns for the second half of the Thanos/Infinity Gauntlet story.

Captain Marvel is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2019. Check the trailer below.
