Chris Evans Joins Daniel Craig in Rian Johnson-Directed Murder Mystery Knives Out

Chris Evans is joining James Bond—uh, Daniel Craig—in Rian Johnson’s new movie Knives Out, per Deadline.

Hopefully, word of an impending Evans project will heal the broken hearts of devoted Captain America fans. The announcement comes on the tail end of widespread speculation that Evans will say goodbye to his longtime Marvel gig having wrapped Avengers 4.

“Playing this role over the last eight years has been an honor,” Evans tweeted Thursday, seeming to confirm that next year’s Avengers film will mark his last performance as Cap.

But Evans is staying busy. On top of Knives Out, the actor has thriller The Red Sea Diving Resort on the horizon, as well as his impending TV return in Apple’s Defending Jacob, and he was cast in Neill Blomkamp’s Greenland at Cannes.

We don’t know much about the character the Captain America star will be playing. Quite frankly, we don’t know much about Knives Out at all.

Knives Out has been described broadly as an Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery. All we know for sure is that the movie will feature a classic “whodunit” narrative and Craig will play a detective investigating a murder.

That’s not much information, but it’s enough to garner widespread anticipation.

The movie also got a lot of attention at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. In the biggest deal to come out of this year’s fest, Media Rights Capital picked up Johnson’s project in September.

Johnson is best known for his work as the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Looper and Brick filmmaker wrote the Knives Out script and will produce the film with partner Ram Bergman before turning his attention to directing a brand-new Star Wars trilogy.

Johnson has said that he’s been interested in writing his own Christie-inspired murder mystery for a decade now. The Star Wars director finally realized his desires, and he penned what he’s called his “contemporary version of the locked door mansion murder mystery” this summer.

It’s expected that Knives Out will begin shooting in November, before Craig makes his final appearance as 007 in Bond 25.
