My New York Marathon is a Love Letter to Running, NYC & the Human Spirit
Art by Sebastien Samson
Best known for sci-fi and fantasy epics like The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Mœbius, famed European publisher Humanoids broke new ground earlier this year with the launch of their Life Drawn imprint, which focuses on personal, political real-world narratives. From an Afghanistan travel journal to a humorous exploration of religious identity and how it relates to the world’s most famous superhero, Life Drawn covers a bevy of topics and tones not typically represented by Humanoids’ more genre-specific offerings.
Life Drawn’s latest release, out next week, is Sebastien Samson’s My New York Marathon. Outside of Haruki Murakami’s What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, literature and running don’t often go hand in hand, but Samson’s memoir is an affirming love letter to the event and the city around it—and boasts endorsements from several celebrity runners, the New York Road Runners club and the New York Marathon itself. Samson, a runner during his youth, decides decades later to test his aging body and participate in one of the most famous running events in the world. From France to Brooklyn, Samson lets running take him on the journey of a lifetime.
