DC Comics Is Releasing New Black Label Editions of Classic Titles

DC Comics has announced new details today about its mature readers line, DC Black Label. The publisher is updating some of its classic titles with new editions, adding a Black Label stamp. According to THR, DC is planning on launching over 20 of these editions in 2019 alone.

Highest on the list is Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and John Higgins’ Watchmen. The limited series is sliding into the zeitgeist as of late, with a new TV show in the works, as well as Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’ Doomsday Clock series, which unites the Watchmen universe with DC’s continuity. Gibbons, who drew and colored the original Watchmen, will contribute a brand new cover to the book’s Black Label edition. Other than that, it’s not clear if the Black Label editions will include new content or feature new cover art across the line.

The line’s only been active for a month, but it’s already hugely popular. DC Black Label broke the internet last month when it premiered its first title, along with Batman’s batawang, in Batman: Damned #1. Sean Gordon Murphy’s Batman: White Knight was retroactively given the Black Label treatment and is already headed for a second printing after being on shelves for less than a month.

THR was provided with a full list of next year’s DC Black Label rereleases, which you can check out below (hope you like Batman). Notable among them are Kingdom Come, Batman: Year One, Superman: Red Son, Batman: The Long Halloween and Black Orchid, perhaps the most obscure title on this list, which marks some of Neil Gaiman’s earliest published comic work. Be sure to keep scrolling to take a look at some of the new trade dress in action.
