Ewan McGregor Joins DC’s Birds of Prey as Villain Black Mask

Ewan McGregor has joined the cast of DC’s Birds of Prey as its villain Black Mask, per Deadline.

Black Mask, aka Roman Sionis, is a Gotham City mob boss who leads the False Face Society gang, and who in the comics killed his parents in order to take control of their corporation. He loses everything due to his failings as a businessman, however, for which he blames others, including Bruce Wayne.

McGregor joins Margot Robbie, who will be reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn in the female superhero team-up film. Rounding out the Birds of Prey team are Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who will be playing Huntress and Black Canary, respectively.

Birds of Prey comes from director Cathy Yan, who will become DC’s first Asian female director with the forthcoming film. Yan recently confirmed that Birds of Prey will be R-rated, and will feature a half-Asian character, Cassandra Cain, who in the comics becomes Batgirl.

McGregor starred in Disney’s Christopher Robin earlier this year, and will also appear as Danny Torrence in Doctor Sleep, director Mike Flanagan’s direct sequel to The Shining.

Birds of Prey is scheduled to open on Feb. 7, 2020.
