New on Starz: All the Movies and TV Coming in December

With December comes minty, 500+ calorie coffee drinks, hyper-cheerful holiday tunes on repeat, the ugliest of sweaters and plenty of binge-watching. As the weather gets colder and colder (and family members become more and more present), the final month of the year is the perfect time to unwind, inside, with your streaming platform of choice. Despite not inundating itself with Christmas movies this year (looking at you, Netflix), Starz has a handful of great titles coming to the service this December. Here’s what we’re most looking forward to in the streamer’s upcoming changing lineup.

With the holidays comes a sense of magic and romance, and there’s no better way (binge-watching-wise) to celebrate that than with the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s, arriving on Starz on Dec. 27. The film that inspired droves of first time New Yorkers to grab a bite on the jeweler’s famed stoop stars Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, tackling the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope years before Elizabethtown inspired the term, and George Peppard as the lonely writer Paul (or Fred, depending on who you ask). Also joining the lineup on Dec. 27 is Country Strong, the heartbreaking tale of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Kelly Canter that shares some DNA with this year’s smash hit A Star is Born. Starz is bringing on quite a few films before the late-December premiere of those two, though, including: Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, in which the groovy super-spy regains his “mojo”; Carrie, the 1976 original, starring a young Sissy Spacek; and Dr. Doolittle 2, the forest preservation-focused second installment of the series starring Eddie Murphy, all arriving on Dec. 1. Later, Dec. 12 brings Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, starring Taraji P. Henson. Finally, Starz is premiering Dark Crimes, starring Jim Carrey as the intense Tadek, a detective solving a crime that bears eerie resemblance to a recently published novel, and documentary Always at The Carlyle, which brings to life New York’s legendary Carlyle Hotel using the voices of its employees and high-profile guests such as George Clooney, Anjelica Huston, Tommy Lee Jones, Sofia Coppola, Lenny Kravitz and Naomi Campbell.

A smaller selection of TV titles are coming to the platform in December, starting with the continuation of season four of Outlander, with episodes 405 through 408 being released weekly throughout the month. The new season, which began last month, traces the storyline of Claire and Jamie Fraser as they make a life for themselves in colonial America, while their daughter Brianna Randall—living in the 20th century—searches for clues that her parents did in fact reunite in the past. Pro tip: Watch the other three seasons first if you’re new to Outlander. The other major TV release on the platform this December is season two of Starz original Counterpoint, starring J.K. Simmons as Howard Prime and Howard Alpha, two “counterpoints” trapped in swapped universes and adapting for survival. Counterpoint returns on Dec. 9, and you can find the trailer for season two below.

In with the new, out with the old: December finds a few beloved titles leaving Starz for the foreseeable future. Outside of Michael Jackson’s This Is It on Dec. 9, much of the earlier weeks of the month are free from major removals from the lineup. However, the final day of the year finds a whopping 100+ titles leaving Starz, including: Cameron Crowe’s unrealistically epic look at music journalism, Almost Famous; As Good As It Gets, the film that introduced the world to the Brussels Griffon; and the Will Ferrell- and Nicole Kidman-starring remake of a ‘60s classic, Bewitched. Also leaving are Big Fat Liar, The Virgin Suicides and Saving Private Ryan. As far as film series are concerned, December will see the loss of both the Star Trek sagas and the two Home Alone films, although the streamer has kept the former through the holiday for any who want to get lost in New York in between holiday celebrations.
