HBO Orders Stephen King Adaptation The Outsider Starring Ben Mendelsohn

HBO has given a series order to The Outsider, a 10-episode adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling 2018 novel, with Emmy-winner Ben Mendelsohn set to star and produce, per Deadline.

The series hails from The Night Of co-creator Richard Price, who will executive produce with Ozark star/director/producer Jason Bateman, who sources tell Deadline will co-lead, and is also set to helm the first two episodes of the supernatural police drama.

The Outsider follows a seasoned cop and an unorthodox investigator as they work to solve the gruesome murder of a small-town Oklahoma boy, and are forced to question everything when an insidious supernatural force makes its way into the case.

Price executive produces with Bateman and Michael Costigan for Aggregate Films, plus Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment and director-producer Jack Bender (Mr. Mercedes). The series comes from studio Media Rights Capital (MRC), along with producers Bateman’s Aggregate Films and Temple Hill Entertainment.

The Outsider marks Mendelsohn’s return to TV following his Emmy-winning run on Netflix’s Bloodline, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2017. He currently appears in theaters as a star of Robin Hood, and next March, is also making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain Marvel.
