Wes Anderson’s Next Film Is Reportedly Titled The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson started filming his tenth film last weekend in his adopted home country of France, according to a report from IndieWire that features some promising news on the project. Anderson’s next feature is reportedly a live-action film titled The French Dispatch, “a love letter to journalists set at an outpost of an American newspaper in 20th-century Paris [that] centers on three storylines.”

Contrary to reports from earlier this year by French newspaper Charente Libre, Anderson’s next film is not a musical, although, as per those reports, the project does indeed look to be set in post-World War II France.

The French Dispatch has set an impressive ensemble including Anderson cast regulars Bill Murray, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton, as well as newcomers Benicio del Toro, Jeffrey Wright and Timothée Chalamet. IndieWire also notes that rumored cast members include Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman and Léa Seydoux, all of whom have worked with Anderson before on various shorts and commercials.

Written by Anderson and his crew, The French Dispatch is being independently financed by Indian Paintbrush, the production company owned by billionaire Steven Rales, which has also backed Anderson’s last five films. (Find our ranking of his complete filmography here.)

After the controversy around the racial politics of Anderson’s last film, the Japan-set, stop-motion Isle of Dogs from earlier this year, it seems that the visually inventive director is headed to more familiar territory with The French Dispatch. We don’t yet know when The French Dispatch will drop, although we can likely expect the film to bow at next year’s Cannes Film Festival and land with usual distributor Fox Searchlight.
