Margaret Qualley and Anthony Mackie Reckon with Earth’s End in Netflix’s First IO Trailer

Netflix, seemingly going all in on sci-fi nowadays, has shared the first trailer for IO, a new film coming to the streamer on Jan. 18.

Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) stars as Sam Walden, one of the last survivors on a post-cataclysmic, toxic Earth, who, upon encountering another survivor, Micah (Anthony Mackie, Avengers: Infinity War), is faced with an impossible choice: save the planet or leave it.

Netflix’s synopsis explains:

Sam is a young scientist dedicated to finding a way for humans to adapt and survive, rather than abandon their world. But with the final shuttle scheduled to leave the planet for a distant colony, her determination to stay is rocked by the arrival of another survivor, Micah. She must decide whether to journey with him to join the rest of humanity and begin life anew, or stay to fight for Earth’s survival.

IO—named for the moon of Jupiter on which humanity has settled after fleeing their toxic planet—is directed by Jonathan Helpert (House of Time) from a script by Clay Jeto, Charles Spano and Will Basanta. Jason Berman and Laura Rister produce, while Danny Huston (Wonder Woman) also stars as Sam’s father, Dr. Walden.

Netflix’s recent post-apocalyptic sci-fi film uptick has seen mixed results—let’s hope IO delivers some substance, whereas the much-memed Bird Box merely sizzled.
