James Gunn Rehired to Direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films James Gunn has been reinstated to direct the franchise’s third film, according to a Deadline report with official confirmation from Marvel and Gunn.

The deal to reinstate Gunn has reportedly been in the works for months following multiple conversations between Disney and Marvel Studios, in which, ultimately, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn took to the sincerity of Gunn’s initial apology and subsequent handling of the situation. This seems to conflict with August reports of Horn having met with Gunn and stood by Disney’s decision, despite numerous fans’ and the Guardians cast’s support for its reversal … but all’s well that ends well, we guess.

It’s also confirmed that Gunn will first wrap up his role as writer-director for Suicide Squad 2 with Warner Bros and DC before returning to camp Marvel. And since Marvel Studios never formally pursued a replacement for Gunn, he will resume the role as director for the Guardians’ third installment without complication.

Gunn tweeted a statement in response to the news of his rehiring—read it in full below.
