Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani Are a Comedy Dream Team in the First Trailer for Stuber

Sometimes a movie premise doesn’t really need anything more than the right pair of leads. In the case of Stuber, it’s pretty apparent that someone turned to someone else and said “Hey, remember that Tom Cruise movie Collateral? What if that was a comedy? And what if it starred Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani?”

Not that we’re complaining, mind you. The first trailer for Stuber hit the web today, proving to be surprisingly hilarious from the get-go. It seems to feature some great chemistry and a series of excellent gags between Nanjiani, playing an anxious Uber driver, and Bautista, playing the detective he picks up. Why a “grizzled detective” would choose Uber for the purposes of hunting down an international terrorist—beyond the obvious product placement—we can’t say for sure, but presumably the film will explain it to us at some point.

Both stars of Stuber find themselves riding considerable amounts of Hollywood exposure at the moment. Bautista just appeared last night in his WWE return at Wrestlemania 35, and dropped a trailer for My Spy last week. Nanjiani, meanwhile, was announced for Marvel’s The Eternals and Any Person, Living or Dead, in addition to starring in the first episode of Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone revival.

Stuber had its premiere at SXSW this year, and will hit wide release on July 12, 2019. Of note: Its R-rating, and the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney, means that this will be the first Disney-owned film to premiere with an R rating since 2013’s Julian Assange movie The Fifth Estate.
