Lulu Wang’s new film is a lie—truly, as A24’s forthcoming family dramedy The Farewell is based on “an actual lie” from Wang’s life.
The Sundance sensation follows a young Chinese-American artist named Billi (Awkwafina) who learns that her grandmother, Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen), is dying of lung cancer and that the family is choosing to withhold the diagnosis from her. The entire family returns to Changchun to spend their final days with Nai Nai, using the excuse of Billi’s cousin’s (expedited) wedding to do so.
Alongside Awkwafina in her breakout dramatic role (she previously starred in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8) is Tzi Ma, Diana Lin and Jiang Yongbo.
