Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Release Title Track from Forthcoming Album Turn off the News (Build a Garden)

Following their 2017 self-titled LP, blues-country rockers Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have released the title track from their forthcoming album Turn Off the News (Build a Garden), which is available June 14 via Fantasy Records.

Sonically anthemic and fitted with backing vocals from Sheryl Crow, “Turn Off the News (Build a Garden)” is a testament to shutting out the world and enjoying the simple things in life with those you love. The song is refreshing in the fact that it doesn’t dwell on the problems of society, but instead tries to instill and focus on the hope for betterment in the future.

“Rock & roll began as a countercultural movement,” Nelson said in a statement, “so in the true spirit of rock & roll, we’re trying to encourage a lifestyle where people can be active in their local communities, rather than glued to a device.”

Accompanying the single, the band also launched their own video series titled “Good News Garden.” The series encourages viewers to share stories of local activism, community gardening or simply just a message of hope, and then the band will read their favorite submissions in each episode.

Prior to the release of the title track, the band released their lead single “Bad Case,” which is equally as impressive as “Turn Off the News (Build a Garden).” Otherwise, Nelson and the band gained recognition from the 2018 film A Star Is Born, in whiih they portrayed Bradley Cooper’s backing band. Nelson not only served as an inspiration for Cooper’s character and musical stage presence in the film, but also co-wrote and co-produced most of the film’s soundtrack, as well.

Other than Crow’s backing vocals on this track, a myriad of other artists vocally or instrumentally appear throughout Turn Off the News (Build a Garden). Some of the artists featured include Margo Price, Kesha, Neil Young, Shooter Jennings and Lukas’ father Willie Nelson. In terms of recording, the band focused on live performances and kept overdubs at a minimum to ensure a raw, natural sound that is apparent in both of the singles.
