London-based indie-rock provocateur Marika Hackman has announced the summer release of her third album, Any Human Friend, out Aug. 9 via Sub Pop Records.
Co-produced by David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx), the album was written over a year in moments of grief after a painful break-up with a longtime girlfriend. Hackman released the album’s lead single, “i’m not where you are,” a cathartic ode to empty intimacies and emotional detachment from relationships, on April 24.
The longer recording process gave Hackman more freedom to experiment in the studio, where she toyed with Wrench’s vast synth collection and found herself writing songs on the bass. What resulted was a darker departure from her sophomore release, 2017’s I’m Not Your Man.
“This whole record is me diving into myself and peeling back the skin further and further, exposing myself in quite a big way. It can be quite sexual,” Hackman says. “It’s blunt, but not offensive. It’s mischievous.”
With the announcement of the new album also comes the release of Hackman’s dour music video for “i’m not where you are.” The video (dir. Will Hooper) finds Hackman miserable in a spinning carousel of pre- and post-breakup funk, deadpan and detached as agitated lovers call her, make out with her and pour Bloody Marys on top of her head.
Hackman also announced 2019 North American tour dates in support of the album’s release. Check out Hackman’s new video for “i’m not where you are” along with her 2014 Daytrotter Session and tour dates below, and the details of Any Human Friend.
