Netflix Orders New Series from Adventure Time Writer and Artist Elizabeth Ito

Netflix has greenlit a new children’s animated series from Emmy-winning Adventure Time writer and storyboard artist Elizabeth Ito.

Titled City of Ghosts, the series is described as a “hybrid documentary and animated series,” and will follow a group of kids discovering stories by communicating with the ghosts that inhabit their city. The series will also explore Ito’s personal experiences with growing up as a fourth-generation Japanese American in Los Angeles.

City of Ghosts will be Ito’s first venture into showrunning. She will also serve as an executive producer on the series.

Green-lighting City of Ghosts marks another effort by Netflix to grow their nascent animated programming slate. Wednesday, Variety announced that Netflix has ordered a new kids animated series from Japanese showrunner Akira Shigino titled Dino Girl Gauko, set to debut in late 2019.

With its first original animated feature Klaus set to debut at the end of the year and roughly a dozen animated projects currently in production, 2019 and 2020 are shaping up to be Netflix Animation’s most ambitious years yet.
