Hulu and NEON have picked up the North American rights to Cannes Film Festival captivator Portrait of a Lady on Fire from production studio MK2.

The news comes per a Variety report, which is also quick to note that NEON is preparing the film for an awards campaign and theatrical release later this year.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is directed by Céline Sciamma and described in its official synopsis as follows:

Brittanny, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Heloise, a young woman who has just left the convent. Heloise is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is being hailed as one of the best features coming out of the 2019 Cannes film festival, and an early frontrunner for the coveted Palme d’Or. The French-language film stars Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant.

NEON will also be the North American distributor for another Cannes favorite, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite, their acquisition of which we reported on late last year. There’s no set release date for either Portrait of a Lady on Fire or Parasite yet, though both are expected to hit theaters later in 2019.
