Woody Allen Self-Releases Trailer for A Rainy Day in New York, Somehow Still Set for European Release This Year

Prolific director Woody Allen is a slippery one. The 83-year-old filmmaker has managed to release dozens of movies through the course of his decades-long career, wriggling through controversy after controversy with nary a professional consequence. Allen has worked with stars other directors would kill to hire, often leading to works garnering critical acclaim—though a definite decline in general quality can be noted over the years.

But with his latest flick, A Rainy Day in New York, it looked like the jig was finally up. The romantic comedy set in its titular city, Allen’s go-to, was dropped by its distributor, Amazon Studios in 2018 as the #MeToo movement gained strength and had everyone casting a critical eye towards Allen’s, shall we say, spotty personal history.

Well, it looks like despite Amazon’s withdrawal, A Rainy Day in New York will be released in Italy on Oct. 3 before expanding to other countries shortly thereafter.

Allen posted the trailer for the film, which stars Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) and Liev Schreiber (Isle of Dogs), among others (many of whom have since denounced the director and donated their personal profits from the film), on his official Facebook page Friday. It looks to be exactly the sort of film audiences have expected from Allen for years: neurotic characters in New York who happen to sound and act just like Allen, engaging in wacky romantic hijinks. Move along, folks. Nothing new to see here.

If you’re still curious, the trailer is below.
