Boy Scouts Announce New Album Free Company, Share Lead Single “Get Well Soon”

Taylor Vick, the voice behind the Oakland-based indie-country outfit Boy Scouts, just wants you to be alright. Her music is defined by its warm tenderness—twangy guitars, cooing vocals, supportive keys—but she doesn’t necessarily want to be your caretaker.

Boy Scouts’ latest track, “Get Well Soon,” feels like a weighted blanket. Through the song, Vick works through the difficulties of helping someone you love who doesn’t want to accept the help; “Got a thought of you / Do you have one too? / I hope you think of you / ‘Cause we all want you to,” she sings with one foot out the door.

“Get Well Soon” is paired with a video that finds Vick playing her guitar on a red couch, which floats through Oakland with support from hospital balloons with supportive messages. Vick explains in a statement that “Get Well Soon” is “a hard thing to say. You’re hoping somebody will eventually feel better, but there’s also this weird new distance between you.”

“Get Well Soon” is pulled from Boy Scouts’ just-announced new album, Free Company. Vick recorded the album with Stephen Steinbrink, who plays drums, keys and bass, in a DIY studio built inside a shipping container. The band will embark on a nationwide tour in support of Jay Som this fall.

Free Company will be released on Aug. 30 via ANTI— Records. Watch the video for “Get Well Soon” below, then find the album’s art and the band’s tour dates further down.
