Andrew Bird Joins Season Four Cast of FX’s Fargo, Releases Two New Songs

In a role made specifically for him, singer-songwriter Andrew Bird is jumping ship to TV with a confirmed role in the forthcoming fourth season of FX’s anthology series Fargo.

Bird will be joining the likes of Chris Rock, Jack Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley, Salvatore Esposito, Jeremie Harris, Gaetano Bruno, Anji White, Francesco Acquaroli and E’Myri Crutchfield in the new season, as FX announced Thursday, revealing the cast alongside their incredibly Fargo-esque character names:

JACK HUSTON as “Odis Weff”

JASON SCHWARTZMAN as “Josto Fadda”

BEN WHISHAW as “Rabbi Milligan”

JESSIE BUCKLEY as ”Oraetta Mayflower”

SALVATORE ESPOSITO as “Gaetano Fadda”

ANDREW BIRD as “Thurman Smutney”

JEREMIE HARRIS as “Leon Bittle”

GAETANO BRUNO as “Constant Calamita”

ANJI WHITE as “Dibrell Smutney”

FRANCESCO ACQUAROLI as “Ebal Violante”

E’MYRI CRUTCHFIELD as “Ethelrida Pearl Smutney”

AMBER MIDTHUNDER (recurring) as “Swanee Capps”

“I’m flattered and excited to be asked to be in the cast of Fargo,” Bird said in a statement. “I’m a fan of the show and its smart writing, inspired casting and great acting.”

Season four takes place in 1950s Kansas City, Mo., where two crime syndicates, one African-American and one Italian, have struck a deal. To cement their understanding, the two families have exchanged their youngest sons (a change in child from previous reports). Rock is set to portray the patriarch of one of the families.

According to the season’s description, “It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo.”

Production on the new season begins in Chicago this fall, with creator Noah Hawley directing the first episode, and though there’s no confirmed release date for the season, the show is still set to arrive in 2020. While not much else is confirmed about the season, one thing is certain: It’ll somehow tie back to good old Fargo, N.D.

Due to Bird’s role in the show, he has canceled his tour dates between Oct. 28 and Nov. 2. The tour is supporting Bird’s latest album My Finest Work Yet, which was released via Loma Vista Recordings in March, and finds him performing with the likes of Hiss Golden Messenger, Chicano Batman, Madison Cunningham and more.

The news of Bird’s role in Fargo also comes on the same day he’s released We Are Olympians, which features the track “Olympians” and a rendition of it called “The Gotholympians” with Cunningham.

Listen to Bird’s two new track below, listen to his 2007 Daytrotter Session further down and be sure to watch out for him in the forthcoming season of Fargo.
