Listen to a Full Joan Baez Concert From This Day in 1982

Any time a Joan Baez song blares, it sounds like you’re literally sitting at her feet. There’s a beautiful intimacy to her folky ruminations, and her music has long outlived America’s folk heyday in the 1960s.

On this day in 1982, Baez performed at Maine’s Cumberland County Civic Center, armed with her three most valuable tools—her stunning soprano voice, an acoustic guitar and a piano. In this concert, she is especially chatty, even addressing the photographers in front of the stage. She plays a number of classics like Kris Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall,” John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Paul Simon’s “The Boxer.” She also introduced new material like “Happy Birthday, Leonid Brezhnev” and “Children of the 80s.” Baez closed out the show with a particularly moving performance of the traditional hymn “Amazing Grace.”
