One of the reasons why Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, which premiered in 1982, still holds up so well today is because it was not beholden to the ever-changing capabilities of computer graphics. The puppetry and animatronic artistry was and is bold, fresh, creeptastic and extremely intricate. The same looks to be true of Netflix’s prequel series Age of Resistance, which will take place in the years of turmoil after the crystal was split and the world turned upside down.
The series will follow the plight of the Gelflings, who are fated to restore the crystal and peace to the land of Thra, as they are hunted by the Skeksis. Age of Resistance will still be based in puppetry arts, but it will be augmented and smoothed out with CG. That process has been teased by a new featurette that Netflix revealed today during San Diego Comic Con, one that previews a documentary that will air alongside (presumably) the new series called The Making of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Simon Pegg and other stars of the prequel appear with Lisa Henson, Brian Froud, and so many other creatives who are bringing Jim Henson’s vision back to life. Check out the magical featurette below:
