On the latest episode of The Work with Michael Dunaway, Richard Linklater talks about his new movie Where’d You Go, Bernadette, starring the inimitable Cate Blanchett.
“Just when you think you know what you’re doing something as complex as cinematic storytelling,” he says, “it’s going to throw you a curve ball. I spent more time editing this than any movie I’ve ever made. You know, finding the movie. The adaptation process never really ended. It just went on, shaping this. You know, I’m not a find-it-in-the-editing-room kind of guy. I really am not. It’s all there at front. But this one kind of was. There was like, ‘Oh, what? Where is the story?’ Anything that gets too far off the Bernadette-B track feels like kind of going sideways. I just had to feel my way through it, Sandra Adair and I. Yeah, it was quite a sculptural process.”
Also, Lukas Nelson discusses the songwriting process behind his new album, Turn Off the News (Build a Garden).
“You know, if anything, all my songs are directed at me,” he says. “So anything that anybody does will cause me to look inward and see how I allowed myself to get on a frequency to where that’s happening. And so it’s all sort of within me, you know? And so when I write it song directed at anyone, I fully well know that I could probably turn around and say the same thing to myself.”
