Daily Dose: The Fur., “Movie Star”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Taiwan-based dream-pop outfit The Fur. have debuted the first cut from their forthcoming double-sided single Best Comedy, the chirpy and sanguine “Movie Star.”

“Movie Star” is coated in the sort of lo-fi sheen that is unavoidable in a lot of guitar-led indie music, led by a twangy, plucky electric guitar fed through a flanger pedal and funky bass. The track is sweetened and glossed over by frontwoman Liao Yu Wen’s pristine, cutesy and almost effortless vocals—perhaps the standout element of the song—and breaks at its midpoint to let a single horn and drifting synth linger over its repeated guitar riff. The lyrics are a bit nonsensical, but what does it matter: The single is shiny, fun and insufferably catchy—a breezy experience to end your summer with.

The track arrives with a short video (dir. Kao Cheng Kai) of the band performing in the frigid New York winter.

Best Comedy follows the band’s 2018 debut studio LP Town, and will arrive Aug. 25 via Airhead Records in Taiwan and Fastcut Records in Japan. The band will perform two nights in Taiwan in support of the release, and you can find the upcoming dates below.
