Caribou Comes “Home” on First New Song in Five Years

Dan Snaith has released his first new music as Caribou since his sixth album Our Love, sharing “Home” on Tuesday along with his first shows since the days of his acclaimed 2014 LP. The tour brings Caribou to North America, the U.K. and Europe in spring 2020.

Snaith says of his soulful, Gloria Barnes-sampling new single in a statement:

I’m always listening to lots of music and sometimes a loop just jumps out at me—it’s too perfect. That’s how it was with Gloria Barnes’ “Home”—I kept returning to it, meaning to do something with it but not knowing what. Sometimes making music feels like a process I’m in charge of … but there are other times when things just present themselves and my job is to follow their lead. It wasn’t until the circumstances of someone close to me mirrored the refrain of the original song that the track all came together.

When I’ve played it to friends, several of them have said that they feel like it’s speaking to their circumstances, about people close to them. We’ve all had moments when something changes suddenly and catalyses a change in your whole life—when you need to go back to something familiar, pick up the pieces and start again.

Paste ranked Our Love among the best albums of 2014, praising Caribou’s “unwavering ability to use some billowing synth line in its most basic form to create a majestic four minutes of music.” Here’s hoping there’s more where “Home” came from—a press release makes no mention of any more forthcoming Caribou music, but if there is, we’ll all but certainly be hearing about it before the band’s newly announced tour begins in the spring.

Said tour kicks off in Hamilton, Ont., on March 16, 2020, with Caribou playing a handful of North American shows through the near-end of the month before spending April criss-crossing the U.K. and Europe. Snaith is joined by Ryan Smith, Brad Weber and John Schmersal in Caribou’s live lineup.
