The Final Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Trailer Is Electric with Hope and Nostalgia

The last installment in the epic, multi-generational Skywalker saga is nearly here. The final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker launched on what would have been Carrie Fisher’s 63rd birthday on Monday night.

Director and producer J.J. Abrams gives us stunning landscapes and fight scenes on massive scales in this new look. There’s stunning visuals of a variety of settings, which, in Star Wars, means a diverse range of planets. We’re whirled to an emerald oasis with Rey (Daisy Ridley) on the run, ravaging grayscale seas through which the clash of blue and red lightsabers are visible, the latter held by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and icy worlds riddled with lightning strikes and a Game of Thrones-esque seat that could only belong to Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Sure enough, the Sith Lord’s voice snarls in, promising Rey and the Resistance doom, but he’s drowned out by the voice of Luke Skywalker: “Confronting fear is the destiny of the Jedi.”

And Rey isn’t confronting fear alone. Poe (Oscar Isaac), Chewy (Joonas Suotamo), Finn (John Boyega) and all their electronic friends band together in the trusty Millennium Falcon for one last ride. The late Fisher is seen as Leia in a tearful shot, brought into the film through unreleased footage from the previous two installments. Yet these tender moments are bittersweet, as the trailer hints that we may be saying goodbye to some of these characters even before the end credits roll.

The film will arrive in theaters on Dec. 20 with screenings beginning the night of the 19th, complete with gifts and memorabilia for the galaxy’s most devoted fans (find more information on that here). There’s also going to be Star Wars marathons featuring all nine films from the Skywalker saga. The fanfare mirrors the anticipation for Avengers: Endgame back in April, and in some ways, surpasses it: CNET reports that pre-sales on Atom Tickets for The Rise of Skywalker bested Endgame by 45% in the first hour. Of course, we’ll have to wait till December to find out how this story pans out, both in the box office and in the stars.
