Exclusive: London Singer/Songwriter HUSSY Shares New Single “YLMD”

South London singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sophie Ellison (aka HUSSY) has shared a new single “YLMD,” premiering exclusively via Paste. The new single is her fourth to date following her 2018 cuts “Slayer,” “Playtime” and “Forever.”

Ellison has been playing drums for various bands and working as a studio engineer, and during this time, she began writing for HUSSY. Per a press release, “YLMD” is the first song that was primarily made in the studio as opposed to Ellison’s bedroom.

“YLMD” is her peppiest and most sonically vast offering so far, though it preserves the dirty guitar distortions that made her early recordings so raw and exhilarating. Around pummeling guitars and lustrous keys, “YLMD” sounds like a melancholy run through the rain as Ellison appears headstrong but feels a sadness creeping up. Ellison tries to shield both herself and others from the crossfire of self-sabotage, but knows her capacity for emotional sanity is wearing thin. As it turns out, the sparkling haze of this ‘90s-tinged alt-rock tune may be the morale boost she was looking for.

“I could almost say at this stage it has become a love letter to self-empowerment and things going wrong,” Ellison says. “I wrote it a few years ago and feels like it’s almost taken on a new meaning for me now than when I wrote it. Originally it was the frustration over seeing loved one’s self-destruction, ultimately though, it’s a journey of reflection and self-empowerment.”

Listen to “YLMD” below. HUSSY will make another appearance at New York City’s New Colossus Festival in March 2020, and you can buy tickets here.
