Bright Eyes Announce Their First Show After Nine-Year Hiatus, Release Teaser Video

Conor Oberst has been far from irrelevant since Bright Eyes went on hiatus in 2011. He’s had three solo albums since 2014, his punk band Desaparecidos reunited in in 2015, and last year he and Phoebe Bridgers formed the band Better Oblivion Community Center.

Yet the prolific songwriter and musician found it necessary to get back to his roots. In late 2019, Bright Eyes signed with the indie label Dead Oceans, indicating that the emo band consisting of Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott had the intention of releasing a tenth studio album.

And it’s true—today (Jan. 21), the band released a teaser video that features Bright Eyes back in the studio, with support from a string section.

“Bright Eyes is not just a formative artist for me personally, but for countless people who work at Dead Oceans,” said Dead Oceans co-founder Phil Waldorf in a statement. “To get to work with a band that is part of our own origin stories in falling in love with music is the rarest of privileges. We are thrilled to be part of another great chapter in Bright Eyes enduring legacy.”

Dead Oceans also released Better Oblivion Community Center’s eponymous debut album.

In addition to new music, Bright Eyes will embark on their first tour in almost a decade, with stops in Japan, L.A., New York and the U.K.
