Chromatics Release New Single “TOY” in Three Distinct Versions

Synth-pop band Chromatics have released their first new single since 2019’s Closer to Grey, “TOY,” in three alternate versions: “TOY,” “TOY (On Film)” and “Toy (Instrumental).”

Each version has overwhelming similarities, with “TOY (On Film)” standing out in particular. It is velvety, muted and grainy—adding to the band’s cinematic appeal. Chromatics have been featured in film projects ranging from Drive to Twin Peaks: The Return, which featured a live performance from the band.

There is no word as to whether “TOY” is a stand-alone single or a featured track from a forthcoming album. The band’s long-delayed album Dear Tommy has been one of the most elusive LPs in indie music history (band member Johnny Jewel destroyed all physical copies of Dear Tommy after a near-death experience in 2016).

“It’s a song about trying to forget someone you’re still in love with even though they treat you like an object,” said frontwoman Ruth Radelet in a statement.
