Exclusive: Horse Jumper of Love Whale-Watch Amid the Manhattan Skyline in New “John Song” Video

The trajectory of migrating whales and commuting New Yorkers serves as the backdrop for Horse Jumper of Love’s new music video for “John Song” from their 2019 sophomore album So Divine, premiering here at Paste today (Jan. 22).

Shot on 16mm and directed by Brittany Reeber, the music video plays into the band’s slow-moving, molasses-like sound. The video depicts the band members on a leisurely cruise, among whales breaching steadily and stuck in a traffic jam.

“Brittany came up with the idea to film whales and believe it or not, there is whale watching right outside Manhattan (American Princess Cruises),” the band tells Paste. “Seeing them with the backdrop of NYC was incredible but I think there was something truly magical about the reactions of everyone on the ship, working harmoniously to get a glimpse of the creatures.”

The slowcore Bostonians have come up quite a bit since their eponymous debut record in 2016. Especially with their latest LP, So Divine, released last year via Run For Cover Records, Horse Jumper of Love have carved out their dreamy, unhurried but international style, earning them an opening slot on last year’s anticipated reunion tour of legacy slowcore band Duster.
